چکیده

Buffer gas cooling was extended to trap atoms with small magnetic moment μ. For μ ≥ 3μB, 10 atoms were buffer gas cooled, trapped, and thermally isolated in ultra high vacuum with roughly unit efficiency. For μ < 3μB, the fraction of atoms remaining after full thermal isolation was limited by two processes: wind from the rapid removal of the buffer gas and desorbing helium films. In our current apparatus we trap atoms with μ ≥ 1.1μB, and thermally isolate atoms with μ ≥ 2μB. Extrapolation of our results combined with simulations of the loss processes indicate that it is possible to trap and evaporatively cool μ = 1μB atoms using buffer gas cooling.

Sympathetic cooling of polyatomic molecules with S-state atoms in a magnetic trap.

We present a rigorous theoretical study of low-temperature collisions of polyatomic molecular radicals with (1)S(0) atoms in the presence of an external magnetic field. Accurate quantum scattering calculations based on ab initio and scaled interaction potentials show that collision-induced spin relaxation of the prototypical organic molecule CH(2)(X(3)B(1)) (methylene) and nine other triatomic ...

Buffer-gas Loading and Magnetic Trapping of Molecules

Ultracold and cold molecules have enormous potential for yielding a wealth of new physics and new technologies. Molecules possess several features that greatly increase the possibilities for new interactions, collective quantum states and effects, collisional processes, fundamental symmetry tests and chemical processes. This is due to 1) the strong interactions between the dipole moments of pol...

Magnetic trapping of strongly-magnetized Rydberg atoms

Effective magnetic moments of drift Rydberg atoms in strong magnetic fields are obtained for different energy and angular-momentum states. Classical two-body trajectory calculations and quantummechanical one-body calculations are employed. For heavy atoms such as rubidium, the trapping dynamics can largely be explained by the net magnetic moment due to the cyclotron and the magnetron motion of ...

Decelerating Neutral Dipolar Molecules

Slowing down atoms using laser cooling, together with techniques like magnetic trapping and evaporative cooling, has led to numerous exciting results over the last decade [1], with the realization of Bose-Einstein condensation as the most spectacular achievement [2]. Laser-cooling schemes are applicable to atoms since closed multilevel systems can be realized and many consecutive absorptionemis...
